Here is a poem I penned for my lovely mother back in the day when I penned poems:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally a Poem for My Mother<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wondering what kind of poem is right for you,<br \/>\nyears go by with words for others.<br \/>\nFor wedded friends and once-upon-a-time lovers;<br \/>\nfor settings and sunsets; great joy, flat sorrow and<br \/>\nmarvel at simple things.<br \/>\nPoems for teachers, fathers, even dogs or rain<br \/>\nOr the welcome smell of bread<br \/>\nlike a warm cottage in a damp wood<br \/>\nand the new rays of spring light<br \/>\nthat wake long tired spirits to rise<br \/>\nup out of drowsy winter.<\/p>\n<p>Poems for all these<br \/>\nthrough the years have come<br \/>\nbut for a mother there are few.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is the fallibility of<br \/>\npoems and words<br \/>\nThat could never rightly paint<br \/>\nthe astounding presence of spirit<br \/>\nover a loud expanding family of seeming innocents<br \/>\nwho are each wise, when cornered,<br \/>\nrife with talent and the strange gift of empathy;<br \/>\nwho are open with each other and in love<br \/>\nwith the possibilities of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Because at the core &#8211; beneath<br \/>\nthe light cynicism of day to day &#8211;<br \/>\nthey have hope and they have faith.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps no poems come<br \/>\nbecause you <em>will<\/em> them away<br \/>\nwith merciless, indomitable Irish modesty,<br \/>\nor whatever it is that lets you dance around \u00a0in a tutu<br \/>\nlilting slightly flat tunes<br \/>\nin front of principals, superintendents and<br \/>\ngod knows who else<br \/>\none moment<br \/>\nBut be as private and reserved as the reverend mother<br \/>\nthe next<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps no poem can find you<br \/>\nbecause you are on the internet<br \/>\nor at \u201cDecells\u201d shopping for some one else<br \/>\nor rebuilding a church<br \/>\nor at some grandchild&#8217;s soccer game, concert recital,<br \/>\ngraduation day, birthday party, stage performance,<br \/>\narts &amp; crafts fair, etc.<br \/>\nor feeding someone<br \/>\nor buying food to one day possibly feed to someone<br \/>\nor listening to someone&#8217;s point of view<br \/>\nor challenging someone&#8217;s point of view<br \/>\nor patiently helping the ones you love<br \/>\nget where they need to that day<\/p>\n<p>I guess the right poem for you is none.<br \/>\nYou claim to never understand them anyways<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s doubtful that justice could ever be done<br \/>\nthrough a verse about daisies and April rain<br \/>\nSo I&#8217;ll just say what a marvelous 70 years!<br \/>\nThrough God&#8217;s grace we&#8217;ve been blessed having you here<br \/>\nand just so you don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m wasting your time<br \/>\nTo make it seem like a poem I&#8217;ll end with a rhyme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mother&#8217;s day is coming this weekend.
